Indian Institute of Delhi (IIT Delhi)
Established as College of Engineering in 1961, the Institute was later declared as an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963" and was renamed as "Indian Institute of Technology Delhi'. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) is one of the fifteen IITs created as Centres of Excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology In India. Since its inception, more than 35000 have graduated from the reputed institute in various disciplines including Engineering, Physical Sciences, Management and Humanities & Social Sciences. Of these, nearly 3541 received Ph.D. degrees. The number of students who graduated with B.Tech. degree is over 11970. The rest obtained Master's Degree in Engineering, Sciences and Business Administration.
History of IIT Delhi
The concept of the IITs was first introduced in the year 1945 by Sh. N.M.Sircar, the then member of Education on Vicerory’s Executive Council. This then resulted in the creation of first IIT in Kharagpur in 1950. After accepting the recommendations of the Sircar Committee and help friendly countries, the
Institutes of Technology at Madras, Kanpur and Delhi came up with with collaborations with West Germany, USA and UK respectively.
IIT Delhi has a strong alumni network who work in the top companies as managers and scientists or have their own startups. Many also contribute significantly by opening their own NGOs or working for various social sector organisations.
Academic Programmes in IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi offers Bachelor of Technology programs in various fields as well as dual degree B.Tech-cum-M.Tech programs. The admission to these programs is done through JEE Advanced.
IIT Delhi also offers postgraduate programs awarding M.Tech (by coursework), M.S. (by research), M.Sc., M. Des., MBA under various departments and centres.

IIT Delhi Campus
IT Delhi is situated at Hauz Khas in South Delhi bounded by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Complex on the west, the National Council of Educational Research and Training on the south. The campus is flanked by Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas monuments. The inside of the campus resembles a city, with gardens, lawns, residential complexes and wide roads. It is about 19 Km. away from the Delhi Main Railway Station, 14 Km. from the New Delhi Railway Station, 21 Km. from the Inter-State Bus Terminal and 10 Km. from Delhi Airport.
It houses the following:
- Student Residential Zone
- Faculty and Staff Residential Zone
- Student Recreational Area, that includes the Student Activity Center (SAC), football stadium, cricket ground, basketball courts, hockey field, lawn tennis courts and swimming pool
- Academic Zone that includes department offices, lecture theatres, libraries and workshops.
